Director Shekhar Kapur took to his Instagram account on Sunday to share a nostalgic throwback image featuring himself and the late actress Sridevi from their classic film Mr India. The picture, captured on the first day of shooting, served as a heartfelt tribute to her memory.

In the caption, Kapur vividly recollected how he—and the entire crew—were spellbound by Sridevi’s performance on that inaugural day. “This was my first day of shoot with Sridevi ever. We were shooting a song in Mahabaleshwar. And when she started to dance the world stopped for all of us the only thing that moved was Sri Devi dancing. We all just gawked. It was like another being had descended amongst us. and I even forgot to say Cut ! Like everyone else in the set … We were too mesmerised by Sridevi’s dancing,” he wrote, capturing the surreal moment that unfolded on set.
Beyond her mesmerizing presence, Kapur emphasized another dimension of Sridevi’s character—her unwavering loyalty. “There were other things about Sridevi that are not spoken about … that she was fiercely loyal … When the film got into trouble…she would take any chance she got to protect me ..speak about how incredible I was…she took it upon herself to fiercely protect her Director,” he shared, highlighting her commitment to both him and the project.
He went on to reflect on the duality of her persona—the star power and the vulnerability coexisting so beautifully. “Yet behind her stardom … behind her incredible talent ..lay such innocence … such vulnerability. And she would use not only her talent to perform ..but bring to it her vulnerability and innocence to it too. As if the only person she would express her inner feelings to was the camera … her protector in a way,” Kapur added.
Concluding the tribute, Kapur noted that her willingness to reveal her innermost self before the camera made her extraordinary. He wrote, “That’s why she was such a star … she was not afraid to reveal her inner self to the Camera.”
He also noted that Sridevi passed away in 2018 at the age of 54, paying homage to her enduring legacy.
He reminded readers that Mr India, released in 1987 and starring Anil Kapoor opposite Sridevi, revolved around a plot in which the protagonist uses an invisibility watch to fight injustice, and the film emerged as a major commercial hit, becoming the second-highest‑grossing Hindi film of the year with worldwide earnings exceeding Rs. 100 million.
