Marking four years since the release of Mimi, Kriti Sanon took to social media to share a nostalgic throwback video from the film that earned her a National Film Award for Best Actress. Released in July 2021, Mimi remains one of the most talked-about roles of Sanon’s career, not only for its emotional depth but also for the physical transformation she underwent for the character.

Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, Mimi is a Hindi-language adaptation of the Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhaychy! (2011). The film tells the story of a young woman who agrees to become a surrogate for a foreign couple, only to be abandoned midway through her pregnancy. Left to fend for herself, Mimi decides to raise the child alone—navigating societal judgment, emotional upheaval, and her own evolving sense of motherhood.
Kriti Sanon portrayed the titular character and widely received praises for its subtlety and emotional nuance. She gained nearly 15 kg for the role to depict the physical reality of pregnancy, a move that showcased her commitment to authenticity. A short clip from the film which was posted by the production house Maddock films captioning it, “Years may pass, but Mimi will always feel like home”, which was reposted by Kriti on her Instagram story.
Alongside Sanon, the film features Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Manoj Pahwa, Supriya Pathak, Evelyn Edwards, and Aidan Whytock in pivotal roles. The narrative struck a chord with audiences for its sensitive handling of surrogacy, layered performances, and family-driven storytelling. Mimi not only marked a turning point in Kriti Sanon’s filmography but also reinforced her position as a leading actor in contemporary Hindi cinema.
On the professional front, Kriti will next be seen in Aanand L. Rai’s Tere Ishk Mein opposite Dhanush. The film is slated for a theatrical release on November 28.
