Filmmaker Karan Johar has always been vocal about embracing parenthood through unconventional means. He is the proud father of twins, Yash and Roohi, whom he adopted in 2017. As more individuals in India choose adoption or surrogacy to become parents, Johar has taken a thoughtful and progressive stance on how to approach the topic with his children.

While some parents prefer to keep such conversations private or delay them, Karan is committed to complete honesty with his kids. Speaking candidly with Soul Safar with Bhaav about how he’s approached the subject so far, he revealed that he began with gentle, age-appropriate answers.

“So initially I was poetic about it with them because they were too young. And when they said, ‘Where did we come from?’ I said, ‘You came from Dada’s heart.’ Then there came a point where my daughter understood the biology of it and said, ‘That’s not possible. We have to come from someone’s stomach.’ Then she never asked me again, and nor did my son,” Karan shared.

Karan also spoke about the family dynamic at home. “And now, from a very young age, they’ve called my mother ‘Mama.’ So there’s a Dada and Mama. They know Mama is much older and they know she’s actually a grandmother. They now understand, but somehow they haven’t brought it up.”

Acknowledging the role of structured support, Karan credited the school his children attend for its sensitivity and professionalism. “But we do have counselling at school, which has been a huge help. I’m deeply grateful to the counsellors of the school they go to, which is the Nita Mukesh Ambani International School. They are very, very good with how they deal with children of all circumstances and situations.”

With Yash and Roohi now eight years old, Karan knows the day for a more in-depth conversation is nearing. “Right now they’re eight, and that big, solid chat hasn’t happened yet. But I think they have an understanding of it. I don’t think they’re completely oblivious to it. It will come up, and I think the only way I would deal with it is complete honesty. I will have to explain the process. Maybe that day is coming soon. In another year or two, I think I’ll have to have that conversation.”

Karan expressed pride in his parenting journey and the love-filled home he and his mother have created. “And I know that I would not be able to lie about something, because I’m absolutely proud of my decision. And it’s not been that they have been denied love at all. I’ve given them the abundant love that a couple would give them. I think me and my mom have been able to do that right. And I hope and pray that they have the emotional understanding and accept it and don’t carry any baggage from it.”
