In a heartfelt and rare conversation on Soul Safar With Bhaav, acclaimed filmmaker Karan Johar peeled back the layers of his public persona to reveal the private vulnerabilities that shape him. Speaking with host Bhaavesh Gandhi, among the many touching revelations, one that stood out was Johar’s candid reflection on how his mother, Hiroo Johar, continues to be the force that keeps him grounded.
Karan Johar recalls mother Hiroo’s hilarious reaction to his Padma Shri: “Are you sure it’s not a crank call?”
When asked how he maintains humility amidst accolades and fame, Karan said with a smile, “I don’t have to do anything. I have a mother who grounds me every day.”
Recalling the moment he was awarded the Padma Shri, Johar shared an amusing yet telling anecdote: “I was in a forest in Italy doing a recce for a film when I got a call from the Home Ministry. They told me I was being awarded the Padma Shri. I was in shock. When I called my mother, her first reaction was, ‘Are you sure it’s not a crank call? They’re giving it to you?’” he laughed.
Even as he tried to reassure her by reading out the official message, her disbelief lingered — a moment that perfectly encapsulates her grounded nature. “Her first reaction is never like, ‘My son deserves it!’ It’s always, ‘How come?’ Even if a film works, she’ll ask, ‘How come?’ And I think, subconsciously, she does it to keep me grounded.”
Johar added that at home, he’s not the celebrated director, producer, or talk show host — just a son who still gets scolded. “At 82, she still screams at me. I get reprimanded, I get told off. I’m nobody at home. My life is about doing what she says.”
He also fondly remembered his late father, Yash Johar, the founder of Dharma Productions, describing him as someone who viewed his son through rose-tinted glasses. “He thought I was extraordinary at everything. Even when I was overweight, he’d say I was slim. But after his passing, it’s been my mother who’s been my anchor.”
“Praise and adulation mean nothing because I come home to reality every day,” he concluded. “No country, no applause, no fandom can make me believe I’m anything more — because I come home to a very grounded mother.”
