The highly talented Vijay Ganguly is on cloud nine as his choreography in the songs of Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has received a marvellous response. The reputed choreographer spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama last week about his process for the Mohit Suri-directorial and also shared fascinating trivia.

Saiyaara led to a frenzy in cinemas across the country, as evident by numerous viral videos. When asked if he experienced a similar sort of craze in his show, Vijay Ganguly confessed, “I’ll be very honest. I have still not seen the film (laughs)! But I’ll see it in a day or two. Mohit sir (director Mohit Suri) has been asking me, ‘Tu kab dekh raha hai?’! However, songs are a major part of the film. I was in a way also a part of the edit of the songs and I knew about the scenes just before or after the song. That gave me an idea as to what happens between the characters in the song. Hence, by the time we worked on all the songs, I felt like I knew the film. I even felt that I had seen the film (smiles). I knew it was going in the right direction. But I’ll definitely watch it as I want to understand what exactly has clicked so well with the audience.”

The fact that viewers are waiting to see the end credit song, ‘Saiyaara Reprise – Female’, and not rushing out of the cinema hall, proves that the film had left an impact on them. On the female version of the title song, Vijay Ganguly revealed, “The wedding song was shot less than a month before the release of the film. It was Adi sir’s (producer Aditya Chopra) suggestion. He said that the film deserves closure. I, Mohit sir and others sat down to understand what we should shoot. We wanted to show what happened to them after they met in the end. We bounced a lot of ideas and eventually we realized that we don’t have much time to shoot as the release is very near. In fact, we had just one day to shoot patchwork and also the song.”

Vijay Gangly continued, “Since time was limited, we decided to focus on the wedding. Mohit sir came up with the concept. It was raining at that time and we were not getting locations. Mohit sir told me, ‘The principal shoot is complete. I know where the film is landing. You just make sure that the emotions are right’. He also told us that ‘Location ka stress mat lo’.”

He added, “If you see the song, all shots are close-ups! After I told people about it, they had to see it again and that’s when they realized that there’s no wide shot in that song at all. But since the emotions have come out so strongly, one couldn’t guess.”

When asked where the film was shot, Vijay Ganguly replied, “We shot it in a bungalow in Madh Island. It was a very small set-up. End credit songs are often a big deal and are shot in a grand location. But that wasn’t the requirement here. While shooting the song, we were getting emotional as it was the last day on the sets of Saiyaara for us (smiles).”
