With more than 30 years of experience in the film industry, Suniel Shetty has taken on various roles — starting as the iconic action star of the ’90s, exploring villainous characters, and currently making his mark in the OTT space. As he gears up for the release of Hunter Season 2, the seasoned actor spoke to Hindustan Times about how Bollywood is evolving, particularly for newcomers.

Suniel Shetty, who established himself in the industry despite lacking a filmi background, remembered encountering pushback during his initial years for not aligning with the “conventional hero” image. “People told me I didn’t look like a hero,” he said. Nevertheless, he persisted and ultimately became one of the most prominent action stars of his era.

However, when questioned about today’s generation of newcomers, Shetty offered a thought-provoking perspective. Challenging the common perception that star kids have an easy path, he pointed out that the film industry is now much more demanding. “The kids have to work harder to prove themselves,” he explained. “Earlier, they assumed they’d automatically be a part of the film world. Today, they know they have to educate themselves, be prepared — whether it’s acting, body language, or everything else. You can’t skip the fundamentals.”

He noted that although competition is undeniably intense, it’s the constant scrutiny from audiences that has become overwhelming. “Everyone is a critic today,” Shetty observed. “But it’s not constructive criticism — it’s about trashing films and performances. That kind of judgment takes a toll.”

His own children have also navigated the ups and downs of the film industry. Daughter Athiya Shetty debuted with Hero in 2015 but quietly stepped back from acting after her 2019 film Motichoor Chaknachoor failed to make an impact at the box office. Son Ahan Shetty made his entry with Tadap in 2021 and is currently working on Border 2 and Sanki.

At the same time, Suniel continues to evolve. In Hunter Season 2 on Amazon MX Player, he stars alongside Jackie Shroff, Anusha Dandekar, and Barkha Bisht, demonstrating that even after three decades, he remains in tune with the changing times.
