Tara Sutaria is holding on to the music of the past—and she has no intention of apologising for it. In a recent interview, the actress opened up about her admiration for the music of the 1950s and 60s, explaining why it continues to resonate with her more than most of what’s being produced today.

“I think it’s simple. The lyrics were simpler. If you listen to the music from that time, the music might be complex, but the lyrics were simple. Melodies were simpler. The instruments that were used were used to perfection,” she said, reflecting on the musical era she holds dear. “If you asked me, maybe there were fewer instruments. I just think it was a simpler time, therefore the music is a reflection of that.”
She added, “I think love was love. Heartbreak was heartbreak. It was communicated effortlessly, simply. Melodies were different. Those songs will stay with you and me forever. We may forget a song that an artist has released in 2019, but we will not forget a song from the 50s and 60s, and you’ll remember the sweetness of the ballad, because there was sweetness in it.”
Tara also pointed out the shift in how songs are written today. “We’ve lost that simplicity in melodies and lyrics. Everything is PR nowadays. Let me write a song with these words in it, because this word is trending. No. Music, films, theatre is about emotion. It is about nothing else. Can you evoke that emotion in a person? If you can, it will be remembered.”
She used the example of her recent film Saiyaara, saying, “Look at Saiyaara. It’s evoking. What is it doing? It is not succumbing to anything that our industry today says will work. For the last few years, people have been saying love stories are not working. Rom coms are not working. This kind of love story won’t work. Saiyaara is everything that a love story should be. It’s true, it’s genuine, it’s from the heart, and it’s evoking emotion, and that’s what our films have not done for so long. And finally, we have a film that’s doing that. And people are wondering, why is it working so well? Because of the emotion, because everybody sitting in that auditorium is feeling everything the maker wants you to feel.”
The actress revealed she’s often made fun of for her retro preferences. “So many people make fun of me for listening to music from the ’50s and ’60s. ‘She’s only obsessed with everything vintage and retro and old school, old-fashioned. It’s so boring.’ Like I play it on set all the time, whenever I’m shooting, and people are changing the music. ‘Who’s playing the music?’ But actually, if you listen to it, it’s very special.”
Concluding with a gentle nudge to audiences, Tara said, “I mean, that’s my opinion, but it’s really something else. And I really urge people to go back to that time.”
