Sanjay Dutt’s raw and rugged look in Dhurandhar unleashed on his birthday, Aditya Dhar calls it “madness” : Bollywood News

The first still of Sanjay Dutt from Dhurandhar was released on his birthday and quickly caught fans’ attention. With a fiery backdrop and a rugged, battle-worn appearance, the image hinted at a character shaped by intense life experiences. What makes the look truly stand out is its uncompromising detail — from styling and makeup to physicality and posture.

Sharing his admiration for the veteran star, director Aditya Dhar took to social media to wish Dutt on his birthday and wrote, “Happy Birthday to the one and only Baba!! You’re pure fire on and off screen. Can’t wait to show the world the madness you’ve unleashed in Dhurandhar. Blessed to have you in my life. Love you Sir! Cheers!! ”

“There’s no vanity in this look. Dutt’s character appears burnt at the edges. Prosthetic scarring runs across his cheek and temple, created using a custom silicone blend by the film’s prosthetics team. His skin has been toned several shades darker, sunburnt and cracked at the edges to suggest prolonged exposure to heat. Sanjay sir’s look had to feel earned,” reveals a source from the costume team. “He’s not playing a stylised villain or a polished enforcer. He’s a man who’s seen too much, who doesn’t flinch anymore. The clothes, the colours, even the dirt, everything had to reflect that exhaustion and strength.”

The detailing in Dutt’s wardrobe speaks volumes. He is dressed in a weathered cotton kurta — undyed, rough-textured, and visibly frayed — with a worn-out leather cross-body holster slung around his neck like a soldier’s comfort item. The grooming is equally precise: a thick, grey-flecked beard, deliberately untrimmed; his moustache merging into his facial hair; and hair grown out and slicked back. The under-eyes were darkened subtly using cream contour, and his lashes left untouched. “We wanted his stare to carry weight, not his dialogue,” the source added.

Much of the impact comes from the character’s stillness. Director Aditya Dhar, known for his reinvention of screen personas (as seen in Uri), wanted silence to speak louder than words. “Aditya wanted his very stillness to feel like tension,” the source explained. “You don’t know what this man will do next — but you know you don’t want to be in his way when he does.”

Dutt’s intense first look — rugged, fierce, and exuding raw power — has resonated strongly with audiences, who are eager to see him in a never-seen-before avatar. At 66, the actor continues to reinvent himself, embracing bold, unconventional characters with unrelenting energy.

Presented by Jio Studios and backed by B62 Studios, Dhurandhar is written, directed, and produced by Aditya Dhar and co-produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar. The film is slated to hit theatres on December 5.
