The intense drama Omkara completed 19 years on July 28. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, it was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello and starred Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi and Konkona Sen Sharma together with Bipasha Basu in a special appearance. The performance of every actor was great, but that of Saif Ali Khan stood out. As the actor celebrates his birthday, we bring to you a fascinating trivia from the sets of this film.

Saif Ali Khan’s look in Omkara was quite appreciated. However, initially, he had reservations about it. A trade source told Bollywood Hungama, “He was adamant about cutting his hair, though he was told why it was important for his character. He reached Lonavala, where the film was to be shot the next day and yet, he was sporting long hair. Director Vishal Bhardwaj decided to keep a wig ready.”

The trade source continued, “But something happened at night. Post-midnight, Saif Ali Khan cut his hair. His first reaction towards his new look was not pleasant at all. He could be heard telling the unit members, ‘Mujhe ab koi kaam nahin milega. Mujhe ghar baithna padega’! However, once he began filming for Omkara, he got used to his look and also began to enjoy playing the negative part.

Another source revealed that for the role of Langda Tyagi, the original choice was Pankaj Kapur. This source told us, “Pankaj had worked with Vishal Bhardwaj earlier in Maqbool (2004). But for some reason, it didn’t work out. This is when the makers decided to have Saif Ali Khan. It was an unusual choice and it paid dividends. Saif is still remembered for his outstanding performance in this well-made film.”

In Omkara, Langda Tyagi plays lieutenant to a chieftain. After the chieftain enters politics, Langda hopes to take up Omkara’s place. But when Kesu Firangi (Vivek Oberoi) is given the honour, Langda comes up with a dangerous plan that wreaks havoc in the lives of the trio and also that of Omkara’s wife Dolly (Kareena Kapoor Khan).
