One of the most controversial developments of recent times is the decision of Eros International to tweak the ending of their much-loved 2013 film Raanjhanaa using AI. Its director, Aanand L Rai, made his displeasure clear as soon as the news of the re-release of the film with a new climax was announced. 3 days after the re-release, lead actor Dhanush also made it clear that he doesn’t approve of it. The episode has led to the possibility of other films also being modified in the same way. Many are also wondering how certain popular movies would seem if they could have a changed ending through AI.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Suneel Darshan as part of the promotions of Andaaz 2. The first part, Andaaz (2003), featured Akshay Kumar’s character Raj Malhotra marrying Kajal (Lara Dutta) and not Jiya (Priyanka Chopra). When asked if he’d like to show Raj getting hitched to Jiya through AI a la Raanjhanaa, Suneel Darshan at first laughed and then said, “I wouldn’t like to change anything. What is done has been done with conviction. Hence, we should let it stay the way it is. Otherwise, tomorrow, the audience might want to see Akshay getting married to both Priyanka and Lara in the movie!”

On a serious note, Suneel Darshan confessed that it is not a healthy practice, “It’ll either prove that the director was a nut, if the film has not worked, which is why the end has been changed. Or else, the person who is doing it has some vested interest. Hence, it might create confusion.”

Suneel preferred that multiple endings be shot and then the makers chose one of them, “This has happened in the past several times. There are times when the directors themselves realize that the end is not working. In fact, some of them even shoot multiple endings and then decide on the ending.”

With Andaaz 2 all set to release on August 8, is there any possibility of Andaaz 3? Suneel Darshan replied, “There’s so much cinema to be made. I have some scripts ready. I just need to take a call on what I can do best next. Sometimes, the genre also depends on the climate. I want to see if I should do a complete action film because I have done that. But my forte is not indulging in super-action films. My forte is more of human dramas with action incorporated in it. So, Jaanwar (1999) had action while Ek Rishtaa (2000) hardly had any action.”
