In an industry where appearance often overshadows authenticity, R. Madhavan—the versatile actor who shines in both Hindi and Tamil films—has chosen to stay true to himself off‑screen. In a candid interview with ETimes, Madhavan revealed his firm stance on not dyeing his hair unless a role specifically demands it.
R. Madhavan reveals he embraced grey hair like Rajinikanth and Ajith Kumar; says, “Ab safed baal aa gaye toh aa gaye. I have never dyed my hair”
Madhavan explained that he learned this attitude from cinematic legends Rajinikanth and Ajith Kumar, whose off‑screen simplicity has deeply influenced him. He said, “I am not good at carrying baggage, nor am I good at carrying lies. Ab safed baal aa gaye toh aa gaye. I have never dyed my hair, unless it is required for a role. I have learnt that from Rajinikanth sir. He doesn’t care about how he looks off‑screen, but on‑screen, he is magic. Just like my friend Ajith (Kumar).”
The actor added, “I’ve learnt from my peers and seniors that it really doesn’t matter what your off‑screen image is. I am very comfortable in my shoes, so I’m not going to project that I’m younger than anybody. I’m not competing with someone who’s younger than me. I’m competing with my own ability and my ability to bring out the best in me. There’s an acceptance of who I am.”
Madhavan, who rose to fame with notable roles in films such as 3 Idiots and Tanu Weds Manu, maintains that botox, surgeries, or intensive grooming are not in his repertoire—unless they serve a narrative purpose. Discussing his approach to body transformations, he cited his role in Saala Khadoos (2016) as an example where he did bulk up for the character but made it clear this was strictly for the script. He said he does not try to fit a mold unless the role demands such a change.
Currently, Madhavan is receiving widespread praise for confidently flaunting his natural greys on Instagram, where fans have lauded his authenticity and grace.
His latest appearance was in the Netflix hit Aap Jaisa Koi, where he actually dyed his hair to match the character. Looking ahead, he has several notable films lined up: he will feature in the romantic comedy De De Pyaar De 2 with Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh, slated for release on November 14; and the action thriller Dhurandhar directed by Aditya Dhar, also featuring Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, and Akshaye Khanna, arriving in cinemas December 5.
Madhavan’s outlook stands as a refreshing reminder that an actor’s real self—unchecked by social pressure or cosmetic assumptions—can be just as magnetic as the characters he portrays.
