R Madhavan was recently seen in Netflix’s Aap Jaisa Koi, for which he received appreciation. The actor spoke about his recent works and why awards don’t matter to him in an interview with us.
R Madhavan on not getting too many awards, “What matters to me is that I am still here after so many years, still relevant”
Maddy, it is sad that you are hardly ever given any recognition or awards in spite of being a pivotal face of Hindi and Tamil cinema for a good forty years?
Chalta hai, yaar. The fact that you think I am worthy of recognition is in itself an award for me.
That’s exactly what the great composer Madan Mohan said to Lata Mangeshkar
He did? There are so many artistes, much much greater than me who have not been given their due recognition. I believe the great Dilip Kumar Saab never got a National award.
True, not even for Devdas…
There you go. What matters to me is that I am still here after so many years, still relevant, at least trying to be, ha ha.
No need to be so modest. From the red hot evil in Shaitaan to the benevolent bechara in Aap Jaisa Koi…. your recent range is a revelation
Thank you so much. God’s grace, man. Like having everything from Shaitaan to this. From pure evil to this pure innocent guy. I remember your reaction after Shaitaan. Oh, you were so like upset that I played such a mean character. Like you were convinced that I was mean and evil.
What nonsense! When you signed on for Aap Jaisa Koi, did you feel that, you know, oh, God, being a nerd, my fans won’t like it?
No, I never thought about what my fans would like or not like. I know, for me, I just know that I have to be sincere to the role that I’m doing and eventually it’ll find its place in my repertoire. So, I never, ever fear what the fans will feel. If they are true fans, they will accept my character for what it is. Not comparing myself to him, but the great Mr Bachchan switched from an out-an- out heroic Zanjeer to shades of grey in Abhimaan and Saudagar during the same year (1973). I want to be that kind of an actor. By the way Mr Bachchan didn’t get any awards for some of his best performances.
I’ve never taken my fandom seriously. Only thing I do know is that if you’re picking up something, make sure you put your heart and soul into it. Yeah, don’t do it half-heartedly. Anything worth doing is worth doing well, is what I’ve always followed. Aap Jaisa Koi was close to my heart because I played a guy from Jamshedpur, because I am originally from Jamshedpur. We shot there, man. And Calcutta, of course. So, the character was somebody that I know I had played a similar character before in Tanu Weds Manu, but this one had that extra element of being unmarried at 44 and with an app. involved, which is very modern. And the fact that you’re trying to amalgamate both patriarchy and progress.
Please explain
Like, a man who does not know that he is being misogynistic. He has no idea, because that’s the way he has been brought up. See, there was a beautiful dichotomy in this story, in Aap Jaisa Koi. So, I had a lot of fun doing this. And, you know, I got a chance to explore that vulnerable side. And I was also very nervous. My character is doing a lot of romance.
What was it like working with Fatima Sana Shaikh?
Very sweet. Really lovely woman. Very contributing. She messaged me, I’m very apprehensive about this because I’ve underplayed and underplaying is not acceptable to a large part of the audience. I said, no, no, please don’t underestimate the audience.
What next?
Lots of surprises. Lots of challenges that I am posing to myself. I am in competition with only myself.
How do you manage to stay so fit at your age?
Nothing artificial. No boosters. Like you said in your article on Allu Arjun, no cosmetic surgery only cosmic surgery. I eat well. I never starve myself. I sleep early and wake up early and look forward to every day as a new birth.
Any regrets that your son Vedaant has not chosen your profession?
Not at all. He is following his own path as a swimmer. By God’s grace, he is doing very well. And by the way, did I follow my father’s profession? So why should my son?
