In a recent revelation that’s making waves across the entertainment industry, Bollywood icon Aamir Khan has shed light on a startling reality—India’s biggest blockbuster films barely reach 2-3% of the population.
Aamir Khan drops shocking truth about Indian Cinema: “Even blockbusters reach only 2-3% of the population”
Speaking at an exclusive chat with Business Today, Khan shared insights he learned nearly two decades ago and admitted they still hold true today. “Even the most successful films like 3 Idiots, Dangal, Animal, or Pushpa manage to attract only around 3 to 3.5 crore people to theatres,” he said. “That’s a mere fraction—between 2 and 3%—of India’s total population.”
The actor-producer, known for his socially conscious cinema and wide-ranging impact, emphasized that this limited reach has long bothered him. “As a creative person, I want to connect with every single individual in the country. But theatres are simply not equipped to do that right now,” he stated.
While multilingual releases like Pushpa may have wider reach due to their pan-India appeal, Khan highlighted that the situation for Hindi-language films remains largely unchanged. “It’s been this way for the last 15 to 18 years, and it continues today. So, the issue isn’t the content—it’s the infrastructure,” he noted.
Aamir Khan, who has frequently taken bold steps to reinvent the traditional Bollywood narrative, is now advocating for a significant increase in cinema infrastructure across India. “There are entire districts without a single theatre,” he pointed out. “We need more density in theatre penetration—not just in urban areas but rural regions too.”
He further explained that increasing access to cinema isn’t just about business—it’s about inclusivity. “Cinema is one of the most powerful storytelling tools we have. If only 3% of the nation has access to it in theatres, what about the remaining 97%?” Khan questioned.
His candid remarks have sparked conversations across social media and the film industry, with many agreeing that India’s theatre ecosystem needs urgent attention. As OTT platforms continue to grow, Aamir Khan’s vision serves as a timely reminder of the need for equitable cultural access—one screen at a time.
