Sitaare Zameen Par, starring Aamir Khan, has emerged as a big hit. As it always happens with all successful movies, many speculated that the slice-of-life feel-good drama had self-bookings. It means that the makers themselves bought tickets to show that the film is running successfully. These so-called experts claimed that many such shows were shown as sold out on booking apps but in reality, there were barely any people inside. Their evidence was that certain shows were almost full way in advance while a show an hour before or later in the same theatre didn’t have any audience.

The trade and exhibitors, however, revealed that this is not true and that Sitaare Zameen Par got a huge amount of group bookings. Charity shows, once a very common occurrence, also made a comeback with the Aamir Khan starrer.

Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal explained, “In the first 2-3 days, there were a lot of charity shows because of the subject of the film. These shows were for handicapped students and those from the orphanages. In such shows, the people of that NGO or social organisation would ask people to buy tickets for the film. Its proceeds would go to charity. The price of the ticket, however, would be Rs. 2000 instead of the normal price. Now, someone might buy 5 tickets worth Rs. 10,000. He may or may not go to watch the film especially if his primary motive was to do charity. The tickets for the show are sold out but inside, there might be just 20-25% of the audience. The pictures and videos of it have been widely shared.”

He also said, “The charity show trend has happened after many years, possibly as the subject touched people. Many theatres in Jaipur had charity shows.”

Satadeep Saha, CEO of SSR Cinemas Pvt Ltd also confirmed, “Even in Bengal, many group bookings took place especially for Sitaare Zameen Par.”

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh exulted, “The little that I know of Aamir, he’s not the type who would indulge in block bookings, corporate bookings or self-buying of tickets. If he wanted to do that, he would have done that in smaller centres where it’s not getting encouraging numbers. Then it would have made sense also. Why would he only buy tickets in multiplexes of bigger cities where the film was already performing? It brings me back to the same thing which I always imply – kuch toh log kahenge; logon ka kaam hai kehna! They are entitled to an opinion of course.”
