Son of Sardaar 2 – Five challenges that lie ahead for the movie at the box office 2 : Bollywood News

In an era where sequels dominate Bollywood’s content pipeline, the announcement of Son of Sardaar 2 has raised more eyebrows than excitement. Over a decade after the original’s release, Ajay Devgn is donning the turban once again. But in a marketplace where audience preferences evolve at breakneck speed, this comedy-action sequel faces an uphill climb. Here are five reasons why Son of Sardaar 2 might have to work harder than expected to make a mark at the box office.

A Sequel without the demand

Franchises are typically fuelled by fan demand and enduring curiosity — think Drishyam, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, or even Stree. Son of Sardaar, though a festive success in 2012, hasn’t exactly left audiences clamouring for a follow-up. Unlike organically expanding franchises, this sequel appears more supply-driven than audience-led – a move that could backfire in a content-savvy age.

The Genre has moved On

Back in 2012, loud, slapstick comedies had a sizeable fanbase. But post-pandemic, viewer preferences have matured, veering toward sharper wit (Dream Girl 2), satirical undertones (Bheed, OMG 2), or horror-comedy hybrids (Stree). Unless Son of Sardaar 2 adapts to this evolved comic sensibility, it risks being written off as tone-deaf nostalgia.

Veteran trade analyst Amod Mehra adds, “The two trailers clearly reveal that the film has slapstick humour. It will not go with the gentry.”

Tough theatrical competition

Timing is everything at the box office – and Son of Sardaar 2 may be walking into a crowded storm. YRF’s War 2 is already commanding massive pre-release buzz. Saiyaara, Mohit Suri’s surprise hit of the year, continues to dominate both urban and rural circuits.

However, Mehra believes release timing may not be a problem: “Every film has its own period. Even if you get two weeks, it’s sufficient if you’ve made a good movie. So that is not a problem. It’s a decent time.”

Cultural stereotypes may not age well

Son of Sardaar relied heavily on caricatured humour and region-specific tropes – elements that no longer fly with today’s socially aware audiences. In 2024, viewers demand authenticity, depth, and sensitivity, even in comedies. The sequel must evolve with the times to avoid appearing regressive.

Mehra also points to another challenge – Ajay Devgn’s age. “Don’t forget that the hero is 50 years old. When he came 12–13 years ago as a sardar, he was acceptable because he was younger,” he quipped.

Lack of a Surprise Element

Blockbusters like Jawan or Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 thrived on reinvention — whether through genre twists, fresh pairings, or standout musical hooks. As of now, Son of Sardaar 2 offers no visible X-factor. The storyline, casting, and direction feel like a continuation, not a reinvention.

Mehra further critiques the marketing, saying, “If you ask my personal view, I found the second trailer even more ridiculous than the first one. Nobody can understand what the film is about.”

Nostalgia Isn’t Enough

As Mehra succinctly puts it, Son of Sardaar 2 may also be hit by a declining single-screen circuit. “The first film was not a hit. It just did decent business, and that too during Diwali, clashing with Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Back then, there were many single screens, which helped its performance. Today, that’s not the case.”

This isn’t to say Son of Sardaar 2 is destined to fail – Bollywood thrives on surprises. Ajay Devgn has proven doubters wrong before. But in a year brimming with tentpoles, evolving audience tastes, and smarter promotional strategies, this sequel needs more than nostalgia and slapstick to stand out.
