Saiyaara, the sweeping romantic drama directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF), has not only emerged as the biggest romantic blockbuster in Hindi cinema history but also marked a glorious return of the genre that once defined Bollywood’s golden era.

The Mohit Suri directorial has reignited the nation’s passion for love stories, drawing comparisons to the likes of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, both generational films that left an indelible impact on pop culture.

Mohit said, “For me, romance is a genre that I love the most maybe because I have always been fascinated by people and their love stories. Everybody’s love story is so different and unique and heartwarming and gut-wrenching that you can feel so many emotions, root for people and believe that love can be the solution to everything, it can be the great healer.”

And with Saiyaara, Suri has perhaps healed the fatigue of formula-driven filmmaking. The film’s music has been a phenomenon in itself — with the title track not only becoming a chartbuster in India but also claiming the No. 1 viral spot worldwide, surpassing even Justin Bieber on global streaming platforms. In a fragmented music landscape, Saiyaara‘s album has united listeners — a feat few Bollywood soundtracks achieve today.

The man backing this project at YRF was CEO Akshaye Widhani, who was determined to create a romantic film with a Gen Z pulse but classic YRF ethos. His instincts proved spot on — Saiyaara connected deeply with young audiences while satisfying long-time fans of Bollywood love sagas.

The film’s stunning success is being seen as a cultural shift. Trade pundits now speak of the industry in terms of “pre-Saiyaara” and “post-Saiyaara.” It has shattered the myth that newcomers can’t drive box office, and that romance no longer has a place in cinemas. In fact, it has done both — and done so with style, soul, and substance.

As Saiyaara continues its dream run in theatres worldwide, with houseful shows and frenzied fan reactions, it also sets a new benchmark — not just for romance, but for Hindi cinema’s ability to renew itself through risk, conviction, and love.
