Mohit Suri is on cloud nine right now. His latest release, Saiyaara, is all set to be a blockbuster. Bollywood Hungama spoke to the talented director a few days before the release and he shared interesting trivia about his career.

EXCLUSIVE: Saiyaara director Mohit Suri CONFESSES that before turning director with Zeher, he directed parts of Emraan Hashmi-Dia Mirza starrer Tumsa Nahin Dekha: “Anurag Basu was going through health issues…”

2025 is a special year for Mohit as he completed 20 years as a director. He was in his early 20s when his debut directorial, Zeher (2005), was released. The same year, Aditya Datt debuted with Aashiq Banaya Aapne while Siddharth Anand released his first film, Salaam Namaste. It’s rare to now see directors debuting in their early 20s. What has changed in this regard?

Mohit Suri said, “I don’t know. I guess we started assisting at a very young age. Siddharth is older than me by 3 years, though. But when I wrote the idea of Zeher, I was hoping that it would be made as a Vishesh Films production, not for me to direct. I was too young. I didn’t know if I was ready but Bhatt saab (Mahesh Bhatt) and Mukesh ji (Mukesh Bhatt) threw me in the water and told me, ‘Go make the film’!”

Zeher starred Emraan Hashmi, Shamita Shetty and Udita Goswami and is remembered today for its gripping narrative, suspense and most importantly, the soulful music. Mohit Suri, at this point, revealed, “I had assisted on eight films of Vikram Bhatt and two films of Anurag Basu. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I ended up working quite a bit on Tumsa Nahin Dekha (2004) as Anurag dada was going through health issues. So, I got to shoot a bit of that. That was my schooling. I also got a chance to explore post-production.”

Tumsa Nahin Dekha starred Emraan Hashmi and Dia Mirza. Shaad Randhawa, who has starred in several films of Mohit Suri, including Saiyaara, said in an interview to Open Magazine in 2014, “I remember the time when the Bhatts were making a film called Tumsa Nahin Dekha, directed by Anurag Basu. He fell seriously ill; so, Mohit and Mahesh Bhatt had to complete the film. Mohit was just 21 then but I knew he would go on to become a big director some day.”

In fact, there are reports that Saiyaara is similar to Anurag Basu’s untitled musical next, starring Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela. On this, Mohit Suri told Mid-Day recently, “I’m very close to Dada (Basu). I have worked as an assistant (to him). So, I met him when he called. He has the right to do that. I went and narrated this film to him. He had started his film and I had finished mine by then. He didn’t seem worried in the least. There was a Rockstar (2011) being made when I was making Aashiqui 2 (2013). This is not Interstellar (2014) that we would worry about.”
